Volkswagen has unveiled its new Beetle on the eve of the Shanghai motor show. Another icon has gone under the knife and emerged, well, only slightly differently iconic, but the changes made to the 2012 Beetle are only superficially slight. Volkswagen global marketing director Luca de Meo says of the car that was revealed simultaneously in New York, Berlin and Shanghai, "We worked on the entire packaging of the car, engine, trunk, interior, everything." Take a close look at it, and it's clear.
The new car, which goes on sale in the UK early next year, continues the retro-styling theme of the previous model, which was discontinued in 2010 after selling more than a million units during its 12-year production run.
VW boasts that the new car is closer in design to the original Beetle and Ragster concept model, first shown in 2005, being longer (by 152mm), wider (by 84mm) and with a 12mm lower roofline than the car it replaces. The new Beetle also has a longer wheelbase and wider track front and rear.
Inside, the new Beetle is available with three levels of trim (Beetle, Design and Sport), as well as options that were previously unavailable to Beetle buyers, including satnav, a panoramic sunroof and LED daytime running lights. The capacity of the car's boot has increased from 209- to 310 litres.
UK customers will get four engines to choose from: 1.2-, 1.4- and 2.0-litre petrols and a 'Bluemotion'-branded 1.6-litre diesel, which is said to return 65.7mpg on the Combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 112g/km.
